About Smart Woman Guides

by Vicki Flaugher, Creator of Smart Woman Guides™

All my life I have been "smart". Some times, like when I was expressing an opposing point of view, it wasn't a compliment. Other times, like when I was clever and good at test taking, it was. It's a word that can be used to express all types of motives and meanings, but ultimately, I have come to embrace that smart is good. Good for me that I am smart, good for others that I am smart, and good for the general flow of life. Even though ignorance is bliss, smart is, well, smart. And contrary to that old cliche', I have found I am much happier in life when I admit I am smart.

What I have found, as I interact with the world at large, is that not everyone embraces being smart. We all have the seed of smart within us, but women, more often than men, shun it. They tone down their smartness (because boys don't want a geeky smart girl) or they dismiss it (oh, it's nothing, this stuff just comes to me easily), or they down right demean it as a subversive trait (see what smart will get you...). I have often wondered why and here is my opinion about it.

Smart means you are responsible. You can't blame ignorance or inability for less than appropriate choices. Smart means education and education means studying, effort, work. Smart means valuing yourself first and that can feel counter to the "nurture others at all costs" mentality that our current society seems to promote. But, frankly, the old adage that men don't appreciate smart women is a bunch of hooey. Many men are very attracted to a competent, confident, smart woman, and often choose that type of partner in life. They gravitate toward power and smart is power.

So, in my campaign for the acceptance of smart, I created Smart Woman Guides. Women who are rational and caring, with depth of both intelligence and emotion, need to know that there are others out there who appreciate their perspective. These women are hungry for more information, they value and are interested in hearing a diversity of view points, and they are constantly growing and improving. I want and need to be part of that perspective. I envision and long for a world where all of us know and value our gifts and talents, including being smart.

The purpose of the Smart Woman website is to build and nurture a community of vibrant women interested in making a positive difference in the lives of themselves and others. If this makes sense to you, whether you are a man or a woman reading this, I ask you to get involved. Send me articles about your experiences, tell me your stories, give me your viewpoint. Share with me the resources that have enriched your journey and I will highlight them here. I desire this to grow into an open forum where smart women (and the men who love them) can gather to express and grow.

For now, stay smart and be well. You are appreciated and needed here and your value is beyond compare. Thank you for showing up!
